The theme for the Family Reading Club this year was traditions, old and new. This fall we celebrated Grandparents Day while recognizing their special family traditions; made a handprint tree; made pumpkin, apple and other harvest food crafts; shared special stories, and had lots of fun at our annual (traditional) Harvest Costume Party.
Through the holiday season, we explored traditions relating to thankfulness, caring, sharing, giving, and celebrating time with families and friends. In November, we made thankful feathers for our pumpkin turkey, a long-running reading club tradition; made holiday cards for soldiers; and created a special holiday craft to celebrate the Thanksgiving tradition. In December, we looked at various holiday traditions and celebrated the "lights" of the holiday season.
In January and February, we brainstormed and discussed winter traditions with stories and crafts relating to snowflakes, snowmen, snow families, and various activities we enjoy outdoors in the winter or inside all cozy on a cold winter day. We made penguin cookies for desert. We also came across the beginning of a new season of birthdays of members to celebrate!
Speaking of celebrations, we had a Valentine's Party at our February 11th meeting with a special "pizza party" dinner as well as played games and made special valentines for our home celebrations with our loved ones. At our February 25th meeting, we had a special guest reader and a yummy dinner prepared by the wonderful ladies of the Upsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa and Gamma. On March 4th we celebrated Dr. Seuss, whose birthday is March 2nd, and the Reading across America program. We enjoyed green (boiled) eggs and ham, read our favorite Dr. Seuss (and other easy-reader authors) books, and made a Seuss inspired craft. What fun!
The Family Reading Club meets Thursday evenings when school is in session at 5:30 p.m. in the Early Head Start room at the Porter Town Hall Building. Join us for dinner, story time, and theme related activities and crafts. It's fun and it's free!
